Settlement in the area started in the early nineteenth century, and the name was changed in 1845 to honor Samuel Kirkendall, a local store owner who donated land for the school. Today Kirksville sits at the intersection of Kentucky Route 1295 and Kentucky Route 595, roughly five miles southwest of Richmond. 

Also near Kirksville is Buggytown, roughly three miles southeast of Kirkland; Paint Lick, around three-and-a-half miles south; and Silver Creek, around two-and-a-half miles east. In the vicinity of this small Kentucky community, you’ll also find several landmarks like Wheeler Cemetery, Ross Cemetery, and Kinnard Cemetery. Paint Lick School, Round Hill General Store, and Kirksville Elementary School are also in the area.
