Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for a New Pet
Is adopting a new pet in your plans for 2019? Before you bring home your bundle of furry joy, check out these tips to help prepare your home!
- Puppy-proof (Or kitty-proof, or lizard proof, or hamster proof!) you home! Think of bringing home a new pet like having a toddler in your house. Are there cords that they could reach and chew? Are there breakable valuables that a cat could easily knock over if they hop up on the counter? Are your trash cans secured? Get down at eye level of your new pet and move through your house. You’ll see hazards that you didn’t even realize were there! Fix them BEFORE you bring your new pet home.
- Get set up. Beyond getting the basic pet supplies (food, bowls, bed, toys), think about where in your home all of these things are going to go. Where does it logistically make sense for the food and water station to be? Do you want your new pet to sleep in your bedroom? Where will you keep the dog leash and bags for going on a walk? Establishing all of these places before you bring your new pet home will help set the tone for once they arrive.
- Determine the rules. Have a family meeting and agree on some rules for your new pet. Will they be allowed on the furniture? Who will be in charge of feeding the pet? How many treats a day will they be allowed? Will the new pet get to sleep in your bed? Maybe the pet will not be allowed to have free reign of the house and will need to be confined to a certain area. These are important things to decide before the chaos and excitement of the new pet sets in!
Bringing home a new pet is one of the most exciting things your family can experience! A little preparation can help the transition (for both you and your pet!) go as smoothly as possible.
