As we say goodbye to 2019, we’re already seeing the new home trends for 2020 emerge.  Some of them have been coming slowly and some are just appearing on the scene.  There’s something for everyone on this list - and the biggest trend of 2020 is to choose the style that makes YOU happy!  Read on for my top 10 home trends of the new year.

Green rooms

With the rise of at-home and virtual jobs, we are spending much more time in our homes.  Bringing the outdoors inside helps us feel healthy and inspired!  Whether it’s exchanging your faux plants for real plants, building a living wall in your living room, or even devoting a whole room as a Garden Room, bring an element of nature indoors this year to give life to your home.

Color is back in the kitchen!

We’ve seen all white kitchens consistently for years.  And with good reason - they’re timeless, classic, clean, and work well with almost any style.  But color has been creeping in this past year, and 2020 will embrace this trend.  We’ll see it mostly with cabinet colors, and the trend will be deep naval blues and teals, paired with satin gold accents and fixtures.  Countertops, backsplashes and walls will remain fairly light and neutral, letting the colorful cabinets pop.

Black accents -inside and out

This one has also been coming up recently but will explode in 2020.  Black accents are an easy way to make a statement in our mostly white and grey homes.  This trend works inside and out.  Think doors, accent walls, fireplaces, garage details, and even porches.

Exterior and Interior natural wood accents

Natural wood accents are the perfect way to bring warmth to our cleanly designed spaces.  That all white kitchen?  Add in some raw wood shelves!  Natural wood will be particularly popular on the exterior of the home.  Garage detailing, front and back porches, shutters, and planters will add a touch of nature to your home’s exterior.

Metal roofs

Metal roofs have a very different look than shingles, and in 2020, that look is what we’ll covet!  While a bit more expensive, metal roofing makes it up for being cost-efficient in terms of maintenance.  Metal roofing is also an excellent insulator, making it a highly sought-out material for those who want to save more on heat-reduction expenses in the long run.

Hybrid rooms

As mentioned, our homes are not just our homes anymore.  They are our offices, day care, entertainment spaces and more.  So we’ll be seeing a lot more of flexible, multi-purpose spaces.  Living rooms with mini-offices in them - just make sure to stay organized in these hybrid spaces.  We’ll also see a lot of exterior living spaces as well.  Bringing the indoors outside extends the footprint of our living spaces and is a great way to get some fresh air!

Super smart homes

Homes are getting smarter and smarter every year.  2020 is no exception.  Not only does a smart home make our lives easier and safer, it can also be incredibly energy efficient.  Whole home interconnected systems make it so easy to outfit your entire house.

Mixing traditional/classic and modern

Anything goes this year!  Mixing classic elements with more modern accents is incredibly on trend.  Think modern, simple furniture with traditional rugs, busts, and accent pieces.  International flair is also hot - pick up pieces from your travels to add your own character to your home.

Cozy spaces

Continuing on the trend of Hygge, creating cozy and comfortable spaces is a big trend for 2020.  Add inviting furniture for lounging and some natural material pieces to create that cozy vibe. Stick to calming natural colors and be sure to add thick comfy throw blankets on your couches and chairs.  Grab a hot chocolate in front of your fireplace and get cozy!

Faux marble

Marble is so beautiful, and the marble look is going strong in 2020.  Emphasis on LOOK.  Faux marble will be what’s hot in kitchens and bathrooms in 2020.  Quartz will be a top alternative because of its durability and ease of maintenance. The new styles of quartz often mimic marble so well that for some it's hard to distinguish one from the other.  If cost saving is on your list, the new laminate faux marble countertops are a great choice.
